Summer Activities

Our dance season begins on May 1st every year with displays in the village of Bathampton. This includes a performance outside the village school where we were founded. There is also a pre-season 'dress rehearsal' in Nunney and Witham Friary (near Frome) on St. George's Day (April 23rd) which is well supported. Since 1949 we have traditionally danced in Bath's Abbey Churchyard on the afternoon of the first Saturday in May and this is sometimes combined with a display at the Bath Flower Show on the same day.

After May Day we dance every Thursday evening until the end of August. The Thursday tours usually take us to three villages in the North Somerset and West Wiltshire area. After the performance in the third village we retire to the nearest pub for refreshment and more dancing and singing. We traditionally dance on the sea-front at Sidmouth in Devon at the beginning of the Sidmouth Folk Week (the Sunday nearest August 1st).

german dancersApart from our regular Thursday outings, we usually manage to meet with other Morris sides at least once during the summer. This may be at a Ring Meeting or at a smaller event organised by ourselves or another Morris side. We have close links with an Ostfriesland folk-dance group in Germany and with traditional music and dance groups in The Netherlands and France. We exchange visits with each group every three or four years.

weddingSometimes we venture further afield on our own. Every year or two we have a weekend 'Welsh Tour'. This usually takes takes us to the Welsh Borders, but not always ... there have been Welsh Tours in the past to Devon and to Dorset!

In 1996 we toured Ireland, appearing at the Tipperary and Ennistymon Festivals. In 1999 we returned to Ireland and toured the Dingle peninsula, appearing at the Castlegregory Festival and again at the Tipperary Festival. 2000 took us to Barcelona, where we danced with the local morris side 'Black Horse Morris' which was founded by one of our members. Central European tours have included Prague in 2003, Budapest in 2005 and Krakow in 2007.

This year we're headed for the Mediterranean with a tour of Malta in September.

Closer to home, we give a number of special performances at private bookings throughout the summer.
